For many, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about printed circuit boards is consumer electronics. Computers, phones, entertainment systems and more have the features and performance we’ve come to expect due to the quality of PCBs housed inside each product. However, emergency responders around the country are beginning to test new products and processes that rely on PCBs to help save lives.

  • Firefighters – Imaging tools allow fire crews to map out the size and location of a fire so that they can plan the best course of action moving forward. Firefighters can also use existing geography and topography to predict when locations are most vulnerable for fires and how they may spread.
  • Police Officers – Technology is being developed that will allow officers involved in shootings and other emergencies to signal for the help they need. For example, PCBs can be placed in gun grips or other equipment that will register when an officer has fired his or her weapon. That can then alert other units nearby or a dispatcher.
  • Paramedics – Mobile technology allows paramedic teams to get information they need to assist crash victims or others that require medical attention during transport to the hospital. These are life-or-death situations that depend on high quality computers, communication systems and medical equipment to save lives.

Quality Assurance for Printed Circuit Boards

Due to the rigorous demands of each individual application, it is important that printed circuit boards be designed and tested to withstand every requirement. Especially when it comes to medical equipment and gear that assists emergency crews, product designers and engineers must ensure that their PCBs will perform as needed. Printed Circuit Boards and Drones in Military Use /blog/printed-circuit-boards-and-drones-in-military-use/ /blog/printed-circuit-boards-and-drones-in-military-use/#respond Fri, 17 Oct 2014 16:02:58 +0000 http://dev.4pcb.com/blog/?p=402 Continue reading ]]> printed circuit bards in drones

You’ve read about them everywhere and you may have even seen a few in the sky near your home. Drones are growing in popularity among average consumers, but for now their usage is limited to photography and videography and little more. However, these drones are also changing the way that wars are waged and everyday life in a combat zone is conducted thanks to increased functionality in printed circuit boards. Drones reduce the number of American soldiers that need to be sent into combat zones, according to an article on PCB007.com. In addition to surveillance, drones are used to fly missions at night or into areas where it is too risky to send soldiers. Armed drones are also accurate and air strikes result in fewer civilian casualties than in ground combat. As the military and aerospace industries begin to rely more on drones and robots to carry out objectives, PCB manufacturers must be ready and capable of producing circuit boards that perform flawlessly under pressure to avoid any missteps that can have potentially fatal consequences.

Ensuring Your Printed Circuit Boards Are Up to Standard

The last thing that you want to find when you are ordering printed circuit boards is that something is wrong with your design and you run into a delay. It is especially crucial to have not only a complete design and your files submitted to your PCB manufacturer during the ordering process, but also a design that will allow your application to exceed your expectations for quality and performance. Some of the most common Gerber file errors engineers run into include:

  1. Missing Aperture List
  2. Missing Drill File
  3. Missing Tool List
  4. Insufficient Annular Ring
  5. Insufficient Inner Clearances

The changes help shift less sensitive components, equipment and parts from Category XI of the US Munitions List to the Department of Commerce’s Commerce Control List. As a result, purchasers are less incentivized to avoid parts and components that are made in the United States. Manufacturers of printed circuit boards that are certified to provide materials for military applications may soon find greater opportunities for business. The changes to the regulations are expected to allow the United States to have greater visibility in the marketplace and boost the competitiveness of the technology and manufacturing industries. These changes are set to go into effect on December 30, 2014.

Printed circuit board innovations in the military and aerospace industries continue at a rapid pace. Thin glass is being examined as an alternative to epoxy resin and other materials for use in the high temperature applications. Laser drilling along with thin glass material could provide PCB manufacturers a new way to manufacture boards with properties that are desirable for aerospace applications:  low thermal expansion and high chemical stability. Read the press release Electronic Circuit Board Based on Thin Glass: Improved Functionality for Aerospace Technology to find out more.

Certifications for Manufacturers of Printed Circuit Boards

Makers of printed circuit boards continue to refine their manufacturing and assembly processes in order to meet the strictest requirements of the industry. Since the military electronics sector relies on the highest quality of PCBs in order to support defense measures it is critical that PCB companies hold and renew certifications.
